Strategic Plan 2024

From the Head of School

Dear MP&MS Families and Friends,

It’s my pleasure to introduce the 2024 MP&MS Strategic Plan. A product of months of work by a dedicated task force of teachers, administrators, trustees, and parents, this plan will move MP&MS forward into its second half-century. Feedback from parents, alumni, faculty, and staff helped center this work.

The Strategic Plan is driven by our mission statement. Our goals are dynamic and comprehensive, serving as a framework to guide our progress in the coming years. To allow for flexibility and fluidity, there is no specific timeline. As we work to accomplish these goals, we will provide regular updates to our community.

We celebrate our 50th anniversary in the 2025-2026 school year. With our mission and this strategic plan leading the way, I’m confident about what we will create for years to come. We will be a shining beacon of teaching and learning in Marin County.

At MP&MS, we have a fundamental belief in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB). We cannot be a truly excellent school without committing ourselves to DEIB every day.

As we put our Strategic Plan into action, DEIB will be woven into each pillar of our plan. With careful consideration, we will continue our work to “build connections to empower ALL students to make a difference.”

Community & Belonging

Goal Statement: MP&MS will build upon and strengthen our mission-driven, inclusive community and foster positive, meaningful relationships within and beyond the classroom.

Priorities:

To strengthen our community by remaining focused on student well-being, social-emotional learning, and mental health
To foster the partnership among the school, families, and community through enhanced opportunities for engagement
To provide on-going DEIB training for the entire MP&MS community
To expand service-learning opportunities into the greater Marin community and beyond so that students understand their role as global citizens

Curriculum & Program

Goal Statement: MP&MS will deliver an academically rich curriculum that aligns all three divisions in a dynamic, joyful learning environment and that inspires each student to reach their potential.

Priorities:

To provide a challenging academic program that engages a wide variety of student interests
To prepare our students with the skills to impact our ever-changing world and thrive with people from backgrounds other than their own
To solidify curriculum alignment within and across all divisions
To expand experiential learning through our outdoor education programs

Faculty & Staff

Goal Statement: MP&MS will invest in attracting, retaining, and growing a diverse professional community to support student learning and achievement.

Priorities:

To develop a long-range plan to increase faculty and staff salaries and provide robust employee benefits
To provide professional development opportunities that inspire life-long learning and keep our faculty and staff current with best practices
To offer leadership trajectories for career advancement
To ensure that our hiring practices appeal to prospective educators from a wide variety of backgrounds and integrate DEIB consistently into our culture

Campus & Facilities

Goal Statement: MP&MS will invest in physical infrastructures, learning spaces, and a mission-aligned campus strategy that reinforces inclusion and belonging.

Priorities:

To examine and address long-standing maintenance needs in an environmentally conscious and financially sustainable manner
To conduct a space utilization study and develop a campus master plan that provides accessibility to all members of our community
To maximize the use of our campus and outdoor spaces, including Tree School, to promote innovative and experiential learning that benefits all students

Financial Sustainability

Goal Statement: MP&MS will develop a financial model that sustains a diverse community and delivers on our mission.

Priorities:

To assess our tuition and tuition assistance models to ensure long-term viability and to support a diverse student population
To examine alternative revenue streams beyond tuition and philanthropy
To establish a faculty and staff compensation plan that attracts, retains, and rewards a diverse, best-in-class teaching and administrative team
To strengthen our financial position by growing our endowment and annual giving campaign and exploring the feasibility of a capital campaign
