The Marin Primary & Middle School curriculum is very broad in scope and diverse in content. As outlined in our school philosophy, we educate our students using what we call a "Teams of Teaching" model and within this model, we emphasize an inquiry based approach to learning. Our goal is for all students to be interested and engaged and to consider learning fun. Our parents often tell us that their children love to come to school here. They say one of the things they like best about our school is that they feel like the teachers really know their children, not just as students, but as people.

What is “Teams of Teaching?"

“ Teams of Teaching” begins with two head teachers in every classroom. Head teachers and specialty teachers merge their skills, talents and expertise across disciplines and specialties. This means that students at MP&MS can approach their understanding of the world through a curriculum that is a unified, cohesive experience. “Teams of Teaching” inspires teachers to understand each child from multiple perspectives, and it allows students to become accustomed to different methods of problem solving and teaching styles. Teachers specialize in designing specific aspects of the curriculum in order to provide more in-depth topical instruction, as they collaborate and learn from each other. Most importantly, “Teams of Teaching” ensures that each student has ample opportunity for one-on-one individual instruction. This concept is fundamentally integrated into the inquiry based approach so that learning breaks through the walls of the classroom and enters into as many other areas of the school as possible.

What is Inquiry Based Learning?

Children are natural learners and problem solvers. By providing an environment that fosters their natural talents, children at MP&MS are motivated and enjoy what they are learning. At MP&MS, the teachers don't compartmentalize subjects. They focus thematically on larger projects or problems in which subject areas can be integrated. So, instead of studying math and geography in isolation, students will learn about India, for example, and study its music, arts, politics, economy and more, combining multiple subject areas in each lesson.
