Head of School Announcement

Marin Primary & Middle school launched a search for its next Head of School on April 20, 2016, with the announcement that Julie Elam would retire at the close of the 2016-17 school year after serving 11 years as Head of School. On November 9, 2016, after an extensive nationwide search, the Board of Trustees announced the selection of Andrew Slater as the new Head of School, effective July 1, 2017. Below is the letter from Board Chair Sam Cross introducing Andrew Slater to the MP&MS community.

Dear Marin Primary & Middle School families and friends,

It is my honor to announce that the MP&MS Board of Trustees has selected Andrew Slater to become our next Head of School, effective July 1, 2017. Andrew was chosen from a national pool of impressive candidates after a very thorough search process. This unanimous appointment was the result of united and enthusiastic support from the Head Search Committee. In Andrew, we have found a passionate, enthusiastic, and dynamic leader to build upon the eleven years of Julie’s inspiring headship.

Andrew currently serves as Founding Associate Head of GEMS World Academy in Chicago. His experience fostering thriving schools is an excellent match with our long-term strategic initiatives, while his background and educational philosophy are strongly aligned with our school’s mission and values. Andrew is also an accomplished elementary and middle school leader who brings a deep array of experiences to MP&MS. He began his career as a teacher at the Bank Street School for Children in New York City and has held the role of Head of School at the Logan School in Denver and the Edmund Burke School in Washington D.C.

Andrew holds a Master of Educational Administration from Harvard University and a Master of Elementary Education from Bank Street College. He graduated with honors with a B.A. in History from Lewis and Clark College. Andrew grew up outside of Boston and in New York City and has ties to Marin County as his wife, Lisa, is a graduate of Redwood High School. Andrew and Lisa are thrilled to be returning to California, and we look forward to welcoming them to the MP&MS family.

I want to sincerely thank all members of the MP&MS community for your commitment to this search process and your invaluable and thoughtful feedback. I am particularly grateful to my fellow Search and Advisory Committee members who put in long hours over many months in this important effort, and for the continued support of our dedicated Board of Trustees.

I look forward to welcoming Andrew to Marin next summer, and I am confident that MP&MS will continue to thrive under his leadership.

Sincerely,

Sam Cross, Chair, Board of Trustees
