Julie Elam, Head of School
Julie joined the MP&MS community in the fall of 2006, bringing over thirty years of experience in education as a teacher and an administrator. She was the lower school head at San Francisco Day School from 1998-2006. Following twelve years as a kindergarten teacher and summer program director for Breck School in Minneapolis, Julie served as the head of their lower school, from 1994-1998. Julie holds a bachelor of science in child development from the University of California, Davis, and a masters of education in early childhood education from the University of Minnesota.
Leila Poutiatine, Preschool Director
Graduating from Smith College with a bachelor or arts in biology, Leila began her career as a seventh grade biology teacher in Seattle. Her passion has always been young children, and after spending ten years at home with her three children, Leila joined the MP&MS staff in 2007 as a junior kindergarten teacher. She and her husband Peter discovered MP&MS as parents (their three children are all MP&MS graduates). Committed to life-long learning, Leila is passionate about her position as Preschool Director.
Erin Murphy, Primary School Director
Erin received her bachelor of arts and masters of education degrees in reading instruction, as well as her reading specialist license from Virginia Tech. She earned her initial teaching credential in curriculum and instruction from George Mason University. Erin began her teaching career in public schools in Virginia before moving to California to teach first and second grades at The Children’s School in La Jolla. She served as reading specialist and literacy coach at the school and led a teaching and research partnership on the development of reading comprehension. Erin joined MP&MS in 2008.
Dave DeMartini, Middle School Director
Dave is in his third decade at MP&MS. During his many years of service to our community, Dave has taught first, second, fourth, fifth, and sixth grades. He directed the summer camp program for fifteen years, and also led the afterschool program. A graduate of Sonoma State College with a bachelor of arts degree in environmental education, Dave has served as director of the middle school since 2005.
David Gottlieb, Director of Learning Resources
David has served as the director of learning resources since 2005. David holds a master’s degree in counseling from San Francisco State and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from UC Santa Cruz. Along with teaching, school counseling, and administrative credentials and experience, David is also a licensed marriage and family therapist. His professional experience includes positions in regular and special education as well as in the mental health field.
