Primary School

Children are naturally eager to question, develop their own theories — even change a point of view.

Drama

Marin Primary & Middle School’s emphasis on creativity and fine arts allows students to enjoy a balance between academic rigor and creative and imaginative learning.  Full time teachers who are specialists in their areas of focus are dedicated to enriching the student’s understanding of drama, music and fine arts.

Our drama program includes students from junior kindergarten through eighth grade, in classes that meet once every week for the entire school year. The curriculum includes storytelling, improvisation, pantomime, acting techniques and styles, staging, scene writing, theatre history, design concepts, script analysis, public speaking, oral interpretation, and debate.

Each semester a students also have the opportunity to participate in a major production through our After School program, with one production one in the fall for primary school students, and another in spring for middle school students. Our enthusiastic drama teacher, who is a professional actor and playwright, creates sophisticated yet developmentally appropriate comedies, musicals and other dramatic productions that invite students to participate and have fun on stage, whether at the introductory or more experienced level. Parent volunteers and older middle school students help to design gorgeous sets and creative costuming, so that each play is wonderfully funny, colorful, and captivating.

Collaborative by nature, drama develops social and cultural awareness, and fosters the ability to see group projects to completion. A rite of passage at MP&MS is the eighth-grade’s culminating annual performance of Moliere’s “The Imaginary Invalid,” which is integrated with the eighth grade literature curriculum. This play is emblematic of how our drama program cultivates self-esteem, confidence, and discipline, and nurtures trust and communication skills.
